Choosing gimbals and panoramic heads

Choose the movement your subject needs

A gimbal balances and follows a collared long lens. A panoramic head helps repeat controlled rotations. Look for the adjustment the job actually calls for before comparing load figures.

Check the lens-to-head path

Identify the collar, foot and quick-release plate as separate parts. Compare where the lens sits in the clamp and how much tilt clearance remains with the camera attached.

Department questions

Do I need a replacement lens foot?

Check the maker's chart. A plate may attach to your existing foot, while a replacement foot can serve a different positioning need.

Can I repeat a balanced setup?

Use the scale markings where the head provides them and check the balance again whenever the rig changes.

What is the first tripod fit check?

Confirm the base thread or support interface in the manual and check that the head can sit flat on the mounting surface.
