How to identify both connections on a tripod accessory

Before you replace a tripod part, work out which two parts it joins. A matching camera screw says very little about the clamp, bowl or stud elsewhere in the setup.

Start with the part you want to keep

Turn the camera off and remove it from the support as directed by its maker. Read the model codes on the plate and head, then check those codes in the manuals for the parts you want to keep.

Look below the head as well

Identify whether the tripod has a flat threaded top or a bowl. A measurement on a product page could refer to the size of a flat base rather than the bowl it fits.

Check movement and clearance after identifying fit

Check that the knob, lever or stop screw will clear the adjacent part. An accessory can have the documented mounting interface and still leave too little room to operate the lock.

Guide questions

What should I write down before shopping?

Record the exact models of the camera, existing plate, receiver and tripod, plus any known screw or bowl size.

Does the plate's camera screw identify the receiver?

No. The screw fastens the camera to the plate. The other side must still fit the receiver.

Is a clearance check useful when the threads match?

Yes. Check the lock, plate entry and clearance around any other part you need to move.

Which accessory suits the job?

  1. The Manfrotto ball head and Leofoto geared head both attach to a documented 3/8-inch support, but they have different upper receivers. You can keep the same legs and still need to change the plate on the camera.

  2. The Leofoto leveler drops into a 100 mm bowl and presents an Arca-type receiver. The Manfrotto flat-base head screws onto a compatible flat stud. Confirm both sides before trying to pair parts like these.

  3. The 200PL goes on a camera using the appropriate screw or adapter. The P-20 attaches to a compatible lens collar foot. Start at the point of attachment even if both accessories solve a quick-release problem.

  4. The 338 levels a flat 3/8-inch connection with fine dials, while the LB-75S includes a bowl adapter and uses a butterfly lock. Match the tripod first, then compare how much correction you need.
